All racers, regardless of rank, must comply with the following racing specifications which are excerpted from the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit Instructions:
A. Width: Overall width shall not exceed 2-3/4″.
B. Length: Overall length shall not exceed 7″.
C. Weight: Weight shall not exceed 5.00 ounces. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in the car. The car may be hollowed out and built up to a maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided it is securely built into the body.
D. Wheels & Bearings: The car must have four operational wheels. Wheels and axles must be from the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit. The words “Official B.S.A. Made in U.S.A.” and other lettering on the wheels shall remain intact and clearly visible to the inspector. Some of the original “tread marks” on the wheel face must be intact, i.e. apparent to the inspector. Washers and bushings are prohibited. Make sure to preserve the ground clearance of the car. If the wheel axles are raised, or objects are to the bottom of the car, the car may drag on the track, preventing it from traveling at its maximum speed (if at all!).
E. Springing: The car shall not ride on any type springs.
F. Details: Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, or interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, and height specifications.
G. Attachments: The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices.
H. Lubrication: Once car has been checked in no further lubrication can be applied to the cars. No Exceptions. Only dry lubrication (graphite) is to be applied to the cars.
I. Inspection: Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The Inspectors have the right to disqualify those cars which do not meet these specifications.
J. Car Repair: If, during the race, a wheel falls off or the car becomes otherwise damaged, then the SCOUT may to the best of his ability perform repairs. The SCOUT may seek advice for repairing the car, but may receive no other assistance. If a car is damaged due to track fault or due to fault of another car or SCOUT, then the track chairman, at his sole discretion, may allow additional repair assistance.
K. Spirit of the Event: All parties are reminded that the purpose of the Pinewood Derby is a fun learning experience for the Scouts, and—importantly—the event is meant to be conducted in an atmosphere of fairness, friendliness, sportsmanship, and fun for the boys. It is more important that a boy follows the rules, demonstrates good sportsmanship, and has fun than he wins. Boys should build their own cars, with supervision from parents. It’s about the experience and learning!
